This fan, black in black, is most probably a mourning fan. The feathers are probably dyed black (they don't display the lucious black of the natural colour). The ebony of the sticks is natural and carved by machine (?). There existed also black feather fans for dance soirées, but they were usually more impressive and had dark tortoise-shell sticks (or at least imitations). A small knotted silk cord hangs on the metal loop. Southern Germany (?), around 1885. Detail below.
