This "Hanswurst" fan, approx. 1720, was probably produced in Vienna and shows the famous popular comedian character "Hanswurst" at a rather rare household chore. This fan, together with a similar one are in the collection of the Carolino Augusteum museum in Salzburg, Austria. The costume of Hanswurst corresponds more to provincial garments than theatrical ones. His black half mask that covers the lower part of the face is typical and must not be confused with a beard. |
